I have been checking out a few podcasts recently.

First of all I listened to a few episodes of the Lone Ranger. The earlier ones are at the bottom I think. I think in total I heard three of them and I noticed a few commonalities. #1 Tonto grunts a lot and has poor grammar. #2 There were a lot of people named Frisbee in the wild west. #3 Buffalo were vicious killing machines.

Secondly I checked out the short 'teaser' clips from Sit Down Comedy with David Steinberg. There are about five of them available and each are only a few minutes long. There are interviews with Larry David, Martin Short, Bob Newhart and a couple others.

Lastly I came across Keith and the Girl. This is a popular New York based podcast featuring a comic and his girlfriend. While it can be entertaining it can be really vulgar and the guy is kind of a jerk. So I don't know if I recommend it or not but check it out yourself if you are bored.

Recently I heard a song by Tom Waits on the radio that really captured my attention. Entitled "Kentucky Avenue" it is from a CD from 1978 called Blue Valentine. I like the simple piano, the poetic lyrics and his delivery. It is quite beautiful. I surprises me that it came from the dark ages of the 70's and the whole CD is pretty good. I actually had to buy it from Amazon to get a hold of it. (pardon the racy advertisements at that download site)

This is the World's smallest horse. It is apparently is one of those small horses and it has dwarfism too. I was listening to the radio, and they started talking about these crazy ants. The mandibles or jaws of these insects are the fastest known moving part of an animal anywhere. "When the two mandibles snap together, they generate a force about three hundred times stronger than gravity, and reach a speed up to 64 m/s." While this is cool in itself, check out this video (edit - 3 actually!) of what they can do! It is pretty amazing. The radio show I got this from is Quirks and Quarks.

Three Movies

Recently I have seen three movies. In theatres I watched Little Miss Sunshine and Crank.

Little Miss Sunshine was a very good movie. It could be classified as a dramatic comedy. It is well written, well acted, and has interesting characters. I like the soundtrack a lot too. Here is the song that opens up the movie that drew me right in from the start. I think it probably has some accordion in it, which is always good.

Crank on the other hand is one of the worst movies that I have ever seen. It stars the bald guy from Snatch and the story is about a hitman that is poisoned and the only way he can stave off death is to keep his adrenaline up. So this leads to doing things like drinking Red Bull, doing 'exiting' things and snorting cocaine. The movie is chock full of distorted shots, and other wacky modified shots to make things look more jazzy. I found this pretty tiresome. In my opinion this film panders to the lowest common denominator and it is horrible written and should be avoided at all costs.

The third movie, which was rented, was Akeelah and the Bee. It is about a girl that goes to a lowsy school and fights to make it to the national spelling bee. While this maybe sounds about as exciting as watching texas hold-em poker or ballroom dancing, it is actually a very nice movie that manages to be inspiring and moving without being smarmy.

The introduction segment of this years Emmys was hilarious. Check it out here. Conan O'brien was the host and he was pretty funny. Regarding the awards themselves I was chagrined to see that Six Feet Under didn't win anything while on the other hand 24 won a zillion awards. Now, I like 24 and continue to watch it, but it can't compare to some of the other shows.

Survive the Racism

Recently I discovered that the new season of Survivor starts with four tribes of different races. (whites, blacks, asians and hispanics). Anyways if you want to hear a racist talk about it listen to Rush Limbaugh's audio thing here. I can't really tell if he is joking or what... It doesn't sound like it. If you do listen to it you can hear him spritz his racist little quips here and there. (He doesn't seem too big on Hispanics) I like the angry caller that calls in about which team would have the advantage in swimming. Here is a quote from the link, "the Asian-American tribe" -- whom he called "the brainiacs of the bunch" -- "probably will outsmart everybody," but while "intelligence is one thing ... raw, native understanding of the land -- this is probably why the Native Americans were excluded, because they were at one with the land and they would probably have an unfair advantage."

Amazing Screw-on Head (Pilot)

Wow, this pilot is really amazing. This is an animated show based on a comic from Mike Mignola (creator of Hellboy) It is extremely weird and hilarious, has an awesome visual style, and incredible voice acting from people like Paul Giammati, David Hyde Pierce and Patton Oswalt. There are 3 parts altogether, each 9 minutes long, so check it out! I really hope they make a series out of it, and hopefully keep the quality up. I don't think I could handle another Heat Vision and Jack lost oppurtunity.

Today I am sharing a Feist song from her Open Season CD and a Johnny Cash song from his American Recordings V CD.

The Feist song is a nice piano only version of one of the songs from the previous CD and the Johnny Cash song is a Gordon Lightfoot song. There are a few songs in particular on the Feist album that are nice and acoustic sounding and is more what she sounds like live. Both albums are pretty good, and I recommend them if are partial to either artist.

Today the Oilers go for the Stanley Cup in Game 7 of the Finals. They were down 3-1 in the series but managed to win the next two games, (one with an overtime, short-handed goal) to take the series to its final game. Their whole run has been sweet.

Do you know what else is sweet? (These two doggies) And also this song that has possessed me to play it over and over for the last couple of days. It is called Streets of Fire from the group The New Pornographers. It is a happy song, or at least a happy sounding song. I haven't concentrated on the lyrics too much but they seem somewhat unusual. The broad singing on the song is Neko Case, who was on Letterman recently although I did not see it.

X-men Poo Pooing

I saw the X-men movie recently and I have to say I was more disappointed going in than I expected to be. This is knowing that the director/writer of the first two left after the project to do the new Superman movie. Now, as your average action movie this movie is ok I guess. but since it is the third of the series it has something to live up to. I felt that the first movie was ok, and that the second movie really improved. Anyways, the plot is fairly ambitious and there are loads of characters both old and new. Unfortunately both are drag the movie down. The script is poorly written in my opinion and Halle Barrie has been plaguing the movies with her portrayal of Storm since the beginning. Also, they turned Wolverine into a massive emotional wussbot. Many new characters get the kind of intro that makes you eager to see more of them in the movie, but they just turn up for a minute or two later in the movie. This is in contrast to the second movie where they introduced the Nightcrawler character quite well (he isn't in this one at all.) So avoid it and save your dollars for the sure-fire critical success, Snakes on a Plane. I leave you with a picture of some guy being Wolverine.

Two Books From Nick Hornby

I recently read 'High Fidelity' and 'About a Boy' by Nick Hornby. Both have been made into movies a while ago. I have always admired the movies, About a Boy has a nice soundtrack done by Badly Drawn Boy and have wanted to read the books, High Fidelity especially, but the books were always too expensive when I looked around. I recently borrowed both from the library, and they were the best reads I have had in a while. First of all they are pretty effortless to read. They are hilarious. The movies are pretty faithful to the books in dialogue and plot etc, but there is just something about the books that made me enjoy it a little more. So check them out sometime.

I have also read his book Fever Pitch which is about soccer fanatacism. It was ok, but unless you are a soccer nut I wouldn't really recommend it. Somehow they based the mediocre Fever Pitch movie starring Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon (about baseball!) I have experienced both and honestly don't see the linkage in any way other than the name. I also have read How to be Good "where the woman protagonist explores contemporary morals, marriage and parenthood." Anyways I recall it as being quite depressing and painful to read, so I wouldn't recommend it, although maybe it is just me. There is also another newer book that he wrote called A Long Way Down and I think it is about four strangers who encounter each other one New Year's Eve on top of a building, where they are planning on leaping to their deaths. Not sure I will give that one a read or not.

Here are two short but amusing videos.

First of all here is a clip from the opening of Saturday Night Live recently where Al Gore appears to be the guest. He is giving a presidential address in a 'what if' he won the election in 2001 kind of deal. It is funny and good and stuff and junk.

Secondly there is a neat snafu courtesy of the BBC. Apparently they accidentally brought an expert's cab driver on the air instead the actual expert. He does an admirable job of making stuff up as he goes along though after the initial shock. He seems like a nice guy and has a pleasant voice.

Japanese Spiderman show

This first one is a from 1978. It is fairly long at 24 minutes, but since it streams you should watch the intro at least. It has a really snazzy song. The video features 'fansubtitles' that help you make sense of the japanese. There are also a few minor tweaks on the Spiderman story that you may or may not notice. In any case it is pretty awesome and has nice swinging sound effects.

Heat Vision and Jack

IF YOU DON'T WATCH THIS ONE I WILL STAB YOU! This show is awesome! This is apparently a pilot from 1999 that was directed by Ben Stiller and pitched to Fox, but they refused despite it being TOTALLY FREAKING AWESOME! It is about an ex-astronaught named Jack and his talking motercycle name Heat Vision (Owen Wilson) and the special effects rival the Spiderman episode in quality. It is really funny.

Oilers Ups and Downs

So the Edmonton Oilers are in the first round of the play offs currently against the number one ranked team in the league the Red Wings. This isn't to say I that worried that they can't win. In anycase there has been some issues with watching them so far. The first game was fine, except that they lost in double overtime. The second game was a disaster because I totally missed watching it because it was a Sunday noon game, however the Oilers won. And last night because I live closer to Calgary the CBC forces me to watch the Calgary Flames game instead. So I listened to the Oilers game over the internet which isn't ideal, but what are you gonna do? The game was going well with the Oilers two goals ahead in the third, until the Red Wings evilly score twice within 18 seconds. This obviously jeopardizes the Oiler's victory but on the plus side the flames game ends and the TV coverage flips over to cover the rest of the Oiler's game. So I am watching the overtime period and it seems pretty good, until I see the Red Wings score a devastating, and stupid looking goal. I yelp and turn off the TV quickly to stop the bleeding. But, this morning I learn that the goal was disallowed and the Oilers eventually won and I missed it! The next game probably won't be on TV either.

There has been strange murder in the City of Medicine Hat. I am not completely clear on all the details, but I guess a twelve year old girl and a twenty-three year old man are being charged with the murder of her family.

Update: She apparently met the guy online or something, and it might have to do with goth type stuff.

Another Update: Here is a better article about it. Apparently they met 'in a goth vampire chat room on the Internet.' Vampires are so tacky.

Three Silk Screen Prints

Here are three of my last, and best prints from my serigraphy class. The above image wasn't really coming out like I had envisioned so I just started doing some kind of junk to it and it turned out okay. The other two are appear to be a little brighter than they really are due to the flash I guess. I felt like I kind of messed up some of the colours, but oh well.

I liked the class, but probably won't take the more advanced one until I get some more design basics under my belt.

I just saw the whole show. It was actually pretty decent, although I think they should remove a lot of the rewards and cut down the length. No one really cares that much about sound, costume design and set design etc. I will have to watch Crash sometime, although I had already heard good things about it.

Over at Fat Planet I found this blurb about this icelander singer named Emiliana Torrini. I like the sound of her voice and the simplicity of the instrumentals in the songs. There are two sample songs there so give it a bit of a peek. In fact, I think the two mp3s are from some live performance and I think this makes them sound a little richer and rawer than the more polished album songs.

That site seems to talk about a diverse array of music.

Recently seeing a picture on the internet of a bunch of lions attacking a hippo I was curious to know if this was photoshopped or not. I came across this page that shows a few pictures of such an event. It has a surprising ending.

Somehow or other I also came across this page of hunters posing with their African animal kills. Share in their courageous victory as they grotesquely hug a leopard, or cheerily smile behind a baby antelope. Elephants and hippos are good for a few laughs. Felling left out because you are a girl? Well don't fret! There's room for young women on these trips too!

Review of Doomination

Every now and then you rent a movie that you expect to really suck, and yet it ends up being quite good. If I had a mind that was sharp I would be able to bring up some examples of this happening.. maybe next time. I know it has happened before though. Anyways I saw the movie Doom today and I was pleasantly surprised. I had totally written this movie off from reviews including Ebert and Roeper. Now, first of all, as a warning, this movie has some gorey bits, most notabley at the start where a limb is dismembered.

Overall the movie is pretty good, especially considering the genre. There are some light weight horror aspects to it and lots of action. Although it is loosely based on a computer game, this pretty much just boils down to a few references here and there. Sure, there aren't demon's from Hell, instead they are genetic mutationy things, but I think this was handled pretty well. There is also a surprising twist that I won't go into, but it is handled in a funny way. Anyways if you are looking for an actiony entertaining movie with a script that doesn't make you want to curl up and die (aside from a few cheesy lines from The Rock's character) then I suggest you give Doom a try.

The Banjo in Songs

I enjoy the banjo. If I was a more bohemian type of person I would perhaps learn how to play one. I have at least two modern songs that I am fond of that make use of this instrument. First of all here is this Dinosaur Jr song, it is unusual. Secondly there is another Tegan and Sara song.

Apparently the Ricky Gervais' podcasts are now going to start costing a bit of money or something (after the original twelve.) I wonder how profitable that is going to be for them. Can't say I consider them worth paying for, but I imagine they will be easy to get through other means for industrious people.

Ricky Gervais is on Definitely Not The Opera today(cbc radio) and should be interesting. Hopefully I remember to listen to it. I have mentioned him in earlier posts here and here.

In other news the second period just ended and Switzerland is beating Canada 2-0 in men's hockey! This is baffling, (I just saw the last seconds of the period).

Update: t_t 2-0 result. They also beat the Czech Republic a couple days ago (with a different goalie too). It is round robin though so Canada will probably still make the quarter finals, or however they have that set up.

Olympic Snafus

Today there were two surprising results for US female competitors. First of all the Swedish hockey team beat the US in a shootout in the semi-final. This is a pretty massive upset because generally Canada and the US massively outclass everyone else, but I guess their goalie was phenomenal. Sweden will play Canada in the final, who will likely crush them.

Another story that is somewhat amusing is in snowboardcross event that featured two Canadians in the final. An American led for basically the entire race, a racing in which two Canadians fell badly, but near the end of the race she tried to do a minor trick, ended up wiping out and the person far behind her passed her and she ended up with silver.

Two Songs From Feline Force

I am a fan of Cat Power AKA Chan Mathers. Recently I read a little thing about her new album in Time Magazine. The author said how much superiour the new album was to her older work because she went down to Memphis and got it more produced and blahbity blah. Anyways I was intrigued but after listening to the album I was disappointed that it felt lifeless in comparison to her older works that I am fond of. (Now keep in mind that I have seen her earlier stuff categorized as 'slowcore' so some of the songs are pretty subdued) Anyways I am presenting two songs for a bit of comparison.

First of all here is one from an earlier album that I like. It is called 'Cross Bones Style' and if I have made you a mixed CD in the past you may be familiar with it. Secondly here is a song from the new CD. Now I don't mind the CD all that much and it is growing on me a bit. This song is probably my favourite from the new CD and is quite simple. So there you go.

Tip of the Day - Eating a whole three dollar container of sour gummy bears in two days is possible, but maybe not advisable.

Update: It seems like the site I upload the songs to have some annoying advertisements. *frown* Anyone had problems with these?

Amusing Short Commercial

I have seen this commercial only once on TV before, but it is random, amusing, features a catchy song, and is short. This link to it that I have found is fairly poor quality-wise though. I even like the commercial despite a few faults that would usually disqualify it. First of all it stars Jimmy Fallon. Second of all it is a Pepsi Commercial. There might be a longer version out there.

Most Reviled Finalist in the Much Music VJ Search

Now, you probably don't really care -or know about even- the Much Music VJ Search TV show but I am going to talk about it briefly anyways. Also, as a side note it appears that you can watch every single show (after they air) on their website. Regardless of the quality of the show this is a nice and convenient. In any case the task at hand is to add a second bad thing to The List.

And I despise this person so much that I had to share it. There is this guy on the show that just gets under my skin. The best way to witness this is to watch the show, but since that isn't likely to occur I will try to elaborate. His name is Erik, and it probably isn't a coincidence that you can move ahead one letter of the alphabet for one of the letters and change it around a bit and you get 'jerk.' There is just something about his very essence that rubs me the wrong the way. The way he presents himself and talks to people is what really irks me I suppose. For example, he interviews Our Lady Peace and starts the interview with some ridiculous statement about how they are the greatest band ever (well I don't remember what he said exactly, but this is how it struck me.) Another instance of him being a dick is him dealing with a housemate. (Yes they live in a house together of course.) Anyways, some girl spazzed out or something and he was just kept drilling her about it, always prefacing his attacks with some BS comment like 'Ok, well I don't want to cause more drama, and I am all over it, and it is cool, but..." and then he proceeds to just harp into the problem and rake it across the coals. He can be very condescending. Anyways... I don't like him. Overall the TV show has a lot of crappy aspects to it, but certain things interest me and I will probably watch it again.

Update2 : They have little journal entries on that website and they have zero comments so far. I might try and make one for giggles.

Beastie Boys / Beatles Mashup

What is a mashup you say? Well basically it is when some guy combines different songs to form one unified song. Today I saw this over at BB. It seems pretty interesting so far, I don't really know the Beatles songs too much, but some of the Beastie Boys songs are familiar and they make an interesting blend. So if you don't mind the Beastie Boys you might like this and I suggest you give it a try.

Conan/Finland Update

Here is a little update on the Conan O'Brien - Finland connection that I mentioned before. Apparently he is going to demand a cabinet position from the Prime Minister. Would be funny to see footage of it, but don't bother trying the video link on that site, I don't think it has anything Conan related. It does have unskippable commercials that you might enjoy though!

Best Thing / Worst Thing #1

Best Yogurt - The best yogurt is the kind with fruit on the bottom and delicious white [unflavoured?] yogurt on the top. First of all this is much more asthetically pleasing than your machine mixed concoction of fruit and who knows what else? Secondly it gives you a choice, and when it comes to yogurt I am Pro-Choice. Do you want to mix it anyways? Well go ahead! Maybe some days if you are feeling peckish you will want to save the fruit for last. I for one prefer to eat the two entities apart. Burrowing through the tasty white surface till you eventually reach the deposit of fruity goodness in the bottom is a pleasant termination to any eating session.

Worst Musical Instrument - This one is easy. I mean, come on, could there even be any debate on this topic? The worst musical instrument is the saxophone. First of all this is hands down the cheesiest sounding thing on the planet. Now, I am not saying that it can't be used for the power of good, and I am no musical instrument expert, but from my experience it is a terrifying tool of tympanic torture. The worst encounter possible one could find oneself engaged with this insidious metal monster is the sax solo. Most often it is a gratiutous, self-indulgent, masturbatory exercise of 'Look at me I'm awesome!' Unfortunately for anyone with over forty percent of their sanity it is not a pleasant experience.

I might compile a list of different wonderful and horrible things. It will be so informative! You can thank me later.
